"Domestic Violence and Trafficking in Asian and Pacific Islander Communities"


Speaker:

Sharon Wie, Director of Programs at Interval House

Sharon WieSharon Wie is the Director of Programs at Interval House with degrees in Psychology and Community Studies.  She has over 14 years of expertise in the fields of family violence, teen dating violence, violence prevention, and international issues surrounding violence against women.  Born and raised in South Korea, she is highly sought after as a trainer and specialist in working with Asian and Pacific Islander victims of domestic violence and trafficking.

Sharon serves as a well-known advisor to programs across the state and has received numerous recognitions and awards for her pioneering contributions including the Battered Women Shelter Program Cultural Competency Award, Presidential Lifetime Service Award, and International Ambassador Award for her work with multi-cultural communities.

Overview:
Domestic violence and trafficking is a critical issue affecting Asian and Pacific Islander communities.  This workshop will provide an overview of the types of violence API women face, identify the contexts that increase the vulnerability of immigrants and refugees, and address cultural issues and language difficulties.  The workshop will distinguish dynamics of domestic violence against API women and provide strategies for improved service delivery for API victims of domestic violence and trafficking.
