Speaker:

Suzanne Brown-McBride.

Suzanne Brown-McBrideSuzanne Brown-McBride began her work on behalf of sexual assault victims in 1991 as a community education specialist and advocate. Since that time, she has managed and directed sexual assault and domestic violence service programs in Oregon and Washington State. Before beginning her tenure as Executive Director of the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault (www.calcasa.org) in 2006, Suzanne was the Executive Director of the Washington Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs (www.wcsap.org) in Olympia, Washington.

Over her career, Suzanne has focused her efforts on the development of effective public policy and legislation related to sexual assault victimization, the supervision of sex offenders, and community responses to violence.

Suzanne is a gubernatorial appointee and Chair of the newly created California Sex Offender Management Board. She is a founding member of the Steering Committee for the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (www.nsvrc.org), a Board Member of the Council of State Governments Justice Center (www.justicecenter.csg.org) and the National Alliance to End Sexual Violence (www.naesv.org). Suzanne has been honored to receive the “Outstanding Contribution to Victim Services Award” from the National Crime Victim’s Law Institute (www.ncvli.org), “The Governor’s Crime Victim Advocacy Award” from Governor Schwarzenegger and the “Fay Honey Knoff Award” from the California Coalition on Sexual Offending (www.ccoso.org).

There are few issues that are more contentious, or challenging than the impact of sexual assault, and sexual offending on our communities. We are awash in media, public policy and debate about what should be done to both hold offenders accountable, and prevent future acts of victimization.

Anti-sexual assault advocates, in particular, have a valuable role to play in the development of local and statewide strategies to manage sexual offenders. This presentation will focus on emerging sex offender management issues and what victim-centered, evidence-based strategies advocates can use to promote community safety.

Opinions expressed are those of the speaker and not necessarily those of the Council and its membership.
