"What Children and Teens Are Doing Online Today – The Internet Landscape and the Phenomenon of Cyber Bullying"
Speaker:
Denny Shaw, COO I-Safe.org
Mr. Dennis Shaw is an experienced lawyer, corporate and federal government senior executive, and adjunct university professor. He has a BA in Political Science (UCLA, 1969), an MA in Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis (University of Lancaster, England, 1970) and a Doctorate of Jurisprudence (University of San Diego School of Law, 1980).
The first segment of this presentation includes a summary report (graphically and statistically illustrated) on the Internet landscape, specifically addressing the use patterns and risky online behaviors of children and teens as identified by i-SAFE’s National Assessment Center, which annually collects more than 150,000 anonymous online survey responses from K-12 students throughout the United States. The Internet use patterns of children and teens covered include: methods of accessing the Internet; use of e-mail accounts, chatrooms, IMing, blogging, Web pages, etc. The risky and inappropriate online behaviors of children and teens examined include: gaming, gambling, downloading music and movies, meeting Internet acquaintances in person, purchasing alcohol and cyber stalking and cyber bullying. The second segment of this presentation presents the topic and phenomenon of cyber bulling, including recent research, how and where cyber bullying occurs, effects and consequences, legal trends, causation, responsibilities, and suggestions on what to do.
Opinions expressed are those of the speaker and not necessarily those of the Council and its membership.
