Keynote

This presentation will be the abbreviated version of a workshop designed to explore intervention strategies for working with people with mental illness who are survivors of sexual violence. This presentation will prepare participants to work more effectively with this population by discussing the barriers to service delivery and presenting strategies for adapting programs and services to accommodate survivors with chronic mental health issues. The exercises will encourage exploration of the language and stigma associated with mental illness and promote understanding of the ways in which this intersects with trauma. The workshop will include examples of the presenter’s experiences in creating and facilitating direct services for survivors of sexual violence with mental illness. This information will help bridge the gap between the mental health professional with limited expertise or information on sexual violence and the crisis counselor or first responder with no formal training in psychiatric illness. The presenter will discuss the causes of the high numbers of sex crimes against people with mental illness.
