Program:

"Treating Aggressive Children Exposed to Domestic Violence"

Speaker:

Michele Winterstein Ph.D.

Michele WintersteinDr. Michele Winterstein is a licensed clinical psychologist with more than twenty years experience in the creation and supervision of innovative programs to help abused, neglected and vulnerable children.  Her commitment to protecting children from sexual crimes and violence developed many years ago  when a 15 year old girl she counseled in a group home for runaway teenagers was sexually assaulted and murdered by a well-known serial killer.   Dr. Winterstein began her professional career working in men’s prisons, but quickly decided that reaching young children and high risk families early was the only way she could really make a difference. As Executive Director of For The Child, Michele provides leadership to 32 employees and 70 community volunteers. She has published articles on child abuse in professional journals and has been recognized by the United States Congress and the State of California for her dedication to creating safety and healing for children and families.

Participants will:
  • learn and practice developmentally appropriate verbal and nonverbal strategies for interviewing children about domestic violence.
  • gain knowledge of treatment strategies and resources for responding to the most frequently occurring emotional and behavioral distress symptoms, including oppositional-defiant and aggressive behavior, displayed by children exposed to domestic violence.
  • learn the key intervention strategies of two treatment methods for improving the relationship between the battered parent and child following domestic violence.
  • discuss the strengths and weaknesses of an evidence-based treatment method (Parent Child Interaction Therapy) for assisting the battered parent in strengthening the parent-child relationships and managing oppositional, defiant and aggressive child behaviors.
