"Building Group Trust and Confidence through Games and Activities:
A Therapeutic Recreation Approach"


Speaker:

Dr. Susan Mathieu, Ed. D.
Assistant Professor, Recreation and Leisure Studies
California State University, Long Beach


Dr. Susan MathieuDr. Susan Mathieu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at California State University, Long Beach. Some of the courses she teaches are Leisure and Aging, Therapeutic Recreation: Facilitating Leisure and Wellness and Introduction to Leisure Services. Additionally she leads a monthly Happiness and Humor group at the Long Beach Senior Center.

She has been listed as a Who's Who Among America's Women and Teachers, received the "Outstanding Therapeutic Recreation Educator Award" from the California Park and Recreation Society, and "Professional Award” from the National Recreation and Parks Association.

Dr. Mathieu has facilitated stress management workshops for young children, youth on probation and counselors working with traumatized adolescents. She also conducts research in the area of aging and happiness and has presented her work at state, national and international conferences.

Keynote

Dr. Mathieu will discuss how a meaningful leisure activity is an essential source of self-worth and confidence for children and adolescents. She will demonstrate how outcome- based group activities and games can reduce stress and anxiety while providing children opportunities to meet their full potential, and achieve happiness.
