Resiliency in Children


Speaker:

Julie O’Donnell, Ph.D., MSW


Julie O'DonnellThis presentation will focus on resiliency in children and strategies to increase protective factors, the building blocks for resiliency. The presentation uses an ecological approach and identifies protective factors within the individual, family, school and community domains. Best practice approaches and strategies to increasing resiliency will be covered. The presentation will stress the need to actively engage children, families, schools and community organizations in efforts to promote resiliency. This presentation will include group activities.
 
Julie O’Donnell, Ph.D., MSW is a Professor of Social Work and the Director of Research Child Welfare Training Centre at California State University, Long Beach. Her primary areas of expertise are in school social work, community schools, family and community empowerment, risk and resiliency, and child welfare.  She has published widely and presented often at national conferences. She is an active member of the Long Beach community. She is currently on the Stevenson-YMCA Community School Advisory Board, and she has written or co-written over $25 million dollars in grants that have benefited the most low-income areas in Long Beach.
