Program: Trauma, Family Violence, Child Abuse, ADHD, Bullying, & the Brain: Commonalities & Implications for Practice Speaker: Robert Geffner, Ph.D. Recent research has shown a connection between childhood maltreatment, family violence, trauma, & ADHD, expanding our understanding of the effects of these types of adverse childhood experiences on the brain. This presentation will analyze the various types of victimization experienced by children that lead to aggressive, impulsive & bullying behaviors, due to the interaction of the brain & psychosocial factors. The goal of the program is to help those working with domestic violence & child maltreatment cases to better understand the dynamics, characteristics, controversies & issues of these children. Dr. Bob Geffner is Founder & President of the San Diego Family Violence & Sexual Assault Institute; President of IVAT (Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma (IVAT)) at Alliant International University, San Diego; a Licensed Psychologist & Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist in both CA & TX; Co-Editor-in-Chief of Haworth’s Maltreatment & Trauma Program; & former Clinical Director of a large mental health clinic in East Texas. He is a Diplomate in Clinical Neuropsychology & in Family Psychology. He has served as an adjunct faculty member for the National Judicial College & as Professor of Psychology at the University of Texas at Tyler. He has also been a researcher & consultant for more than 25 years. His publications include treatment manuals (Treatment of Women Arrested for DV, 2002; Ending Spouse/Partner Abuse: A Psychoeducational Approach for Individuals & Couples, 2000), edited books concerning DV/child maltreatment (Effects of Intimate Partner Violence on Children, 2003; DV Offenders, 2002; Children Exposed to DV, 2000), as well as numerous journal articles & research papers concerning family violence, trauma, sexual assault, child abuse, family & child psychology, custody issues, forensic psychology, neuropsychology & diagnostic assessment.
