Program: Domestic Violence Prosecution
This multi-media presentation will use case examples to demonstrate how a recanting victim changes from the time when she is speaking to the police immediately following the abuse, to when she is testifying at trial. This presentation will also discuss the prosecution of all misdemeanor domestic violence cases in Long Beach and all phases of a misdemeanor case including the filing process, the court process, the misdemeanor victim, and the charges normally filed.
Sharon Panian, Esq., a native of Southern California, has a B.S. in Psychology, a Masters degree in Communication Disorders, and a J.D. from Southwestern University. Prior to becoming an attorney, Sharon was a special education teacher for several years, and then a stay at home mom with her three sons. After a brief stint with a family law practice, she joined the Long Beach City Prosecutor. Sharon has been with the Long Beach City Prosecutor's office for thirteen years. Eleven of those years, Sharon has been with the Domestic Violence unit. For the last five years, she has been the Supervising Attorney. In 2002, our Council was proud to present Sharon with the "Domestic Violence Advocacy Award". Sharon loves doing this work because “it is one of those jobs where you can truly make a difference”. According to Sharon, “It's the best job in the world”. June Magilnick, Esq., joined the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office as a Deputy City Attorney in 2000, before which she served in a similar capacity for the City of Hawthorne, CA for seven years. June has prosecuted most misdemeanor crimes throughout her career but has focused on both family violence as well as law and motion work. June’s prior experience within the legal system includes three years practicing civil law after graduating from Pepperdine University School of Law in 1986. She also sits as a Judge Pro Tem for the Los Angeles Superior Court. An advocate for flexible work schedules, June co-authored the Los Angeles City Attorney’s protocol. As a mother of two elementary aged children, she is visibly involved in the Long Beach, CA community with such organizations as the Cancer League, the Alpert Jewish Community Center, the Jewish Federation and Hadassah.
