John Briere and Cheryl LanktreeProgram: Innovative Approaches to the Treatment of Complex Trauma in Children and Adolescents

Speaker: John Briere, Ph.D., & Cheryl Lanktree, Ph.D.

Miller Children’s Abuse and Violence Intervention Center (MCAVIC), Miller Children’s Hospital, Long Beach and the Psychological Trauma Program of the University of Southern California have collaborated to form the MCAVIC-USC Child and Adolescent Trauma Program.  This project is funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) as a Category II, Treatment and Service Adaptation Center of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network. In this presentation, Dr. Lanktree will provide an overview of the services provided by MCAVIC-USC for children, adolescents, and families traumatized by child abuse, domestic violence, community violence, medical trauma, and traumatic loss. MCAVIC has developed an innovative, evidence-based treatment model, Integrative Treatment of Complex Trauma (ITCT).  Traumatized clients receive services at MCAVIC’s multi-disciplinary clinic, schools of the Long Beach Unified School, and at Miller Children’s Hospital. Dr. Briere will be presenting on the treatment of complex trauma in adolescents, based on adaptations of the Self Trauma model presented in his latest book, Principles of Trauma Therapy (2006).

John Briere, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California; Director of the Psychological Trauma Program at LAC-USC Medical Center; and Co-Director of the MCAVIC-USC Child and Adolescent Trauma Program, National Child Traumatic Stress Network, SAMHSA. Dr. Briere is also a past President of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, and author of a number of books, articles, chapters, and psychological tests in the areas of psychological trauma and interpersonal violence.
