Program: The Power of Storytelling in Youth Violence Prevention

Carlos Morales

Speaker: Carlos Morales, Director, Youth Leadership Development, LACAAW

Carlos Morales graduated from James Monroe High School in June of 1995. As a student there, Carlos was actively involved in violence prevention work, while also volunteering for the Los Angeles Commission on Assaults Against Women (LACAAW). Carlos was one of the original founders of Students Together Organizing Peace (STOP) at Monroe High School, a youth-led club dedicated to preventing violence and other forms of oppression among youth, their families and communities. After graduating from high school, Carlos was hired by LACAAW as a Program Coordinator for their In Touch With Teens program. Since then, Carlos has overseen the creation of numerous materials and curriculum activities for local youth, including the California Department of Health and Human Services-funded Relationship Violence Prevention Action Campaign and the Peacemakers Get It Together conflict resolution/peer mediation curriculum and program at Fulton Middle School. Additionally, Carlos was a lead organizer for the Violence Prevention Initiative Statewide Youth Caucus, funded by the California Wellness Foundation. Carlos is now the Director of Youth Leadership Development, and he overseas all programs and projects that originate at LACAAW’s Mid-San Fernando Valley Violence Prevention Center. Because of his outstanding work with youth at LACAAW, Carlos was awarded a full scholarship to National University, where he is pursuing his Bachelor’s Degree.

This presentation will include the showing of poignant personal stories in the form of short films, using the art of digital story telling, created by youth as a means of expressing feelings about the violence they have faced in their own lives.

Opinions expressed are those of the speaker and not necessarily those of End Abuse Long Beach & its membership.
