Speaker  ~

John Ackerman, MFT

“The Socialization of Children”

John Ackerman is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice and is the Clinical Supervisor of Laura’s House, a non profit agency in South Orange County dedicated to the prevention and treatment of family violence.

John’s presentation will focus on how the family, gender roles and peer culture contribute to emotional problems in children and what we can do as a society to address and help change the status quo.

John began as a counselor with at-risk teens and their families in a Juvenile Diversion Program with CSP and created several teen/parent programs for Orange County’s first Family Resource Center.  He also worked as a therapist for the Child Guidance Center in Santa Ana where he primarily worked with victims of child abuse and did family counseling.

John teaches workshops in schools, community organizations and in the court system on parenting, behavior of boys, conflict resolution and healthy teen dating relationships.

He lives with his wife Malia and his son Luke in Oceanside and is a drummer in a band that seldom ventures out of the garage.
