Ruth Beaglehole

Program:          Teaching Non-Violent Parenting: Breaking the Cycle of Violence with

                        Positive Parenting Strategies

Speaker:           Ruth Beaglehole, M.A.

Early family violence (spanking, verbal and emotional punishment) is the prelude to escalating child abuse in families.  Parents can break the cycle of violence by learning non-violent ways to control their anger with their children.  This presentation will examine the tools of non-violent communication, and the strategies of non-violent discipline.

Ruth Beaglehole is the Founder/Executive Director of The Center for Non-Violent Education and Parenting.  Ms. Beaglehole has been a Preschool/Parent Educator for over 40 years, and is a specialist in Non-Violent Parenting.  Ms. Beaglehole has served as Director of Teen Parenting and Child Care Programs with the Los Angeles Unified School District, a Children’s Advocate at the Hollywood Sunset Free Clinic, a Facilitator for pregnant and teen parents at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, a Parent Teacher Educator at Martin Luther King Hospital, and  Founder/Director/Teacher at Echo Park Silver Lake People’s Child Care Center.  In addition, Ms. Beaglehole has taught at Pacific Oaks College and at Los Angeles City College.

Ms. Beaglehole received her Masters in Marriage, Family and Child Therapy at Philips Institute, and her B.A. at Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand.  Ms. Beaglehole is the author of Mama, Listen!  Raising a Child Without Violence - a Handbook for Teen Parents, and co-author on the Northeast Los Angeles School Readiness Learning Module.  Ms. Beaglehole has also written several articles on non-violent parenting.  Ruth Beaglehole is an experienced presenter, who regularly conducts speaking engagements throughout the country on non-violent parenting for childcare centers, schools, nonprofits, and government institutions.  She has a great sense of humor and an innovative teaching style.  We are thrilled to welcome her to our Council.
