Program: Forensic Nursing

Speaker: Malinda Wheeler RN, MN, FNP

Most people, including health professionals, envision the child sexual abuse examination to be a traumatizing event for the child who has already suffered at the hands of the perpetrator. In this presentation, Malinda will share some of her experiences with actual case studies to help dispel myths about such examinations, to help answer the question, Why are 90% of child sexual abuse examinations normal?, and to provide information about Sexual Assault Response Team (SART), Child Sexual Abuse Response Team (CART), and Child Sexual Abuse Forensic Evaluations.

Malinda has been a Registered Nurse for 24 years. She was a Professor of Nursing for Long Beach City College for 10 years, and has worked as a Family Nurse Practitioner in various settings. For the past 12 years, Malinda has specialized in the field of sexual assault/sexual abuse. Malinda is a past member on the Board of Directors for the International Association of Forensic Nurses and is Founding President of the Southern California Chapter of IAFN. She is also past Co-Chair of the Los Angeles Sexual Assault Coordinating Council and has helped established certification requirements for all Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) Centers in Los Angeles County. In addition, Malinda has helped develop the curriculum for the state law enforcement educational requirements on sexual assault and domestic violence. For the past 12 years, Malinda has been the owner and director of Forensic Nurse Specialists, Inc., a private practice/business that provides forensic evidentiary examinations 24 hours per day to law enforcement for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.

Opinions expressed are those of the speaker and not necessarily those of the Council and its membership.
