Program: "Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and the new AAP Risk Reduction Recommendations"

Speaker: Danielle Sees, RN, PHN, CLE

Daniel SeesDanielle Sees has worked as a Public Health Nurse for the City of Long Beach Department of Health & Human Services for over 3 years. She obtained her BS in Nursing from University of Southern California and received certification as a Lactation Educator from UCSD.  In her time as a Public Health Nurse she has held several different roles including PHN for the Health Care Program for Children in Foster Care and PHN for the Public Health Emergency Management Team.  Currently she is the program coordinator for the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Program and the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program. Danielle is a member of the Southern California Regional SIDS Council, the LA County Infant Safe Sleeping Task Force, and Southern California Public Health Association.

Overview:
The presentation will discuss the newest recommendations released by the American Academy of Pediatrics, October 2011, on SIDS and other sleep related infant deaths. The recommendations are to reduce the risk of SIDS and sleep related suffocation, asphyxia, and entrapment. This is NOT to say that SIDS is the same as suffocation, strangulation, or entrapment. However, the goal is to reduce the number of sleep related infant deaths from any cause. Many infants are dying in unsafe sleeping environments, and it is important to include education to avoid unsafe sleeping situations. In 2011 Long Beach had 8 infants die of SIDS.  The majority of these deaths were associated with unsafe sleeping environments.
Danielle will discuss the ways in which parents, guardians, and childcare providers can reduce the risk of SIDS and other sleep related deaths in infants.
