Program: "The Battered Child Syndrome Half a Century Later - What We Know About Keeping Children Safe"
Speaker: Michele Winterstein, Ph.D. - ForTheChild.org
Dr. Winterstein is a licensed psychologist with more than twenty-five years experience in the treatment of abused, neglected and violence exposed children and their families. She has seven years experience as Executive Director of For The Child and was FTC’s Clinical Director for fifteen years prior to her current role. She currently serves as the Clinical Committee Co-Chair on a multi-agency SAMHSA project dedicated to quality care and improved system coordination for the youngest, most vulnerable children needing mental health and child welfare services.
Overview:
Forty-nine years ago Time Magazine introduced the concept of The Battered Child to the general public, based on an article in a prestigious medical journal by pediatrician C. Henry Kempe and his colleagues. By 1976 all states in the USA had laws mandating the reporting of suspected child abuse. Dr. Winterstein will integrate clinical experience, findings from prevention and treatment research, and national and local child abuse data to consider what we know (and don’t know) about how to keep children safe; best practices for helping children recover from the effects of abuse; and the most promising current approaches for strengthening families and protecting children from physical abuse and neglect.
Opinions expressed are those of the speaker and not necessarily those of the Council and its membership.
